Should Texas Secede?

June 21, 2009

In the last few months there has been more of a focus on the State (Republic?) of Texas seceding from the US of A. There have always been people trying to get the state to get out, but it’s once again come to the forefront.

I’ve heard a number of reasons why they should (TexasSecede.com) and why they shouldn’t (HuffingtonPost.com).  But the one thing that I have not heard is what I consider to be honest opinions of the citizens of Texas.  Yes, I have read many posts tacked on to the end of the news pages, and several people’s blog entries.  However they all seem to be a 50/50 mix.  And the people that say Texas should stay as part of the USA, say it’s because they don’t want to change the status-quo, and because they don’t want to raise a ruckus.

For the record, I don’t live in Texas and I never have.  I have visited briefly, and have a few friends that live there, but I have not talked to them about this yet.  As a citizen, and as a veteran, I wholly stand behind the right of the people to leave if they want.  If this includes taking the whole state with them into a new Republic, so be it.

How DARE the existing government in place think they have the right to force the state to stay a member of the union.  Our country was founded because many people wanted to leave behind an over-bearing government.  They wanted to live their own lives, and not be hounded by the overbearing beaurocrats.  They wanted a free land.  They wanted a SMALL government.  Our country started out the way most citizens wanted it.  Unfortunately, the nature of politics means it is run by politicians, and these politicians are the primary reason our country has become the place it is now.  Don’t get me wrong, our country is great, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

Look at our government now.  Huge, wasteful, bloated, and over-bearing.  The Texans who want their state to secede want to get away from what our government has turned into. People have become too laid-back and no longer fight for their rights.  It’s apparently too hard to demand freedom, it’s just easier to lay back and let the government steal your rights, privacy and freedoms.

One thing that would happen if Texas tried to secede is that there would be a war.  The rest of the US would perceive the secession as a threat to it’s nation, and would do everything in it’s power to keep that land.  Look at this again.  If an existing state, internal to the country, decided it has had enough, and wanted to get out, the US would act as if this was a threat coming for a foreign nation.  So this effectively says that the President of the US will order the execution of everyone in the state, just to keep the land.  What country is this?  The USA or the USSA USSR?  We have the freedom, as citizens, to leave the US and live in another country.  But only our bodies and personal belongings – The thought of a whole state leaving is too much to bear?  That’s not freedom, that sounds like a type of slavery to me.

Maybe our government should take a look at this situation.  If people really want their state to secede, maybe they have a good reason.  Texas isn’t the only state – Vermont and South Carolina have also made waves regarding secession.  Maybe the local and national government should look at why they want this.  These citizens are the ones that the governemt is supposed to be representing, and the ones they are supposed to be working for.  Remember?  They work for us , not the other way around.  Instead of planning the destruction of revolutionaries, maybe they should fix their own problems – the ones that are causing people to want to leave.
